HANDWRITING / WRITTEN COMMUNICATION

There are many components required for effective written communication whether it be pre-printing skills, printing, cursive writing, keyboarding, voice to text/dictation or augmentative communication devices.

Children vary in the age that they will demonstrate a dominance and some children may not establish a dominance prior to the age of seven.  Is your child frustrated with the challenges they are experiencing with written communication? A variety of factors may be involved and treatment can include a number of methods which don’t include printing/handwriting at all.  Our goal is to encourage a child’s skills in a positive manner to successfully achieve the desired outcome identified by the child/caregiver.

Our Occupational Therapists (OTs) are highly experienced and will complete a comprehensive assessment which will address a number of areas.  This may include but is not limited to:

  • Posture/proximal stability/tone
  • Developmental skills (e. g. crossing midline, directionality)
  • Developmental hand skills (e. g. translation movements, motoric separation of the hand, MCP rotation, etc.)
  • Pencil grasp
  • Visual motor integration
  • Motor co-ordination skills
  • Visual perceptual skills, etc.
  • Motor Planning (motor plan for each letter whether it be manuscript or cursive)
  • Use of lines/spaces, punctuation and capital letters
  • Speed of written output

We are available to provide an individualized treatment plan created to meet the specific needs of your child.  We are happy to speak with you to determine a plan which may best meet your child’s needs.
