There is a wide range in children’s development whether your child is neurotypical or neurodiverse. Young children learn through play. Our goal is to engage your child, in a safe and comfortable environment, to progress their skills through the use of fun, goal directed activities.
Our Occupational Therapists (OT) utilize our knowledge of development to complete a comprehensive assessment. Goal setting is collaborative and directed by the child and family/caregiver. The information learned is utilized to encourage or guide the progression of a child’s developmental skills so they are able to participate in:
- Self-care (dressing, bathing, mobility)
- Occupation (daycare, school, employment, volunteering)
- Leisure (hobbies, sports, reading, etc.)
Areas of focus may include:
- Sensorimotor development (developmental skills, self-regulation skills, managing muscle tone, etc.)
- Fine Motor Skills (grasp patterns, bilateral co-ordination, crossing midline, establishing a dominance, visual motor integration, pre-printing skills, etc.)
- Printing or Handwriting Programs (Manuscript, Cursive)
- Gross Motor Skills (encouraging the progression of gross motor skills including mobility which may include the use of equipment such as wheelchairs, power mobility, specialized strollers, etc.)
- Visual Perceptual Skills (spatial awareness, form constancy, etc.)
- Adaptive or Play skills (cognition, memory skills, judgment skills, etc.)
- Activities of Daily Living or ADL (dressing, toileting, etc.)
- Social skills
- Sensory Processing (tactile, auditory, vestibular, kinesthetic, etc.)
We are happy to create a treatment plan (with a variety of formats) specific to each child which may include:
- Direct treatment sessions: A pediatric OT provides in-person direct treatment at a frequency guided by the child’s family (e.g. weekly, bi-weekly, monthly). At the end of each session, the OT provides home program suggestions for follow through by family, daycare staff, etc.
- Consultative OT services: A detailed home program is provided after a thorough initial assessment is completed by a pediatric OT. The OT would reassess intermittently (at a less intense frequency compared to direct treatment) to modify the home program as requested.
- Written reports are available upon request (as per the fee guidelines).
